The New Coffee Place at UTEP

There’s a new place to get your caffeine needs fulfilled on campus. Texas Western Cafe, which has replaced Jazzman’s in the UTEP library, now serves as one of the central locations for coffee on campus.

Located between Einstein Bros Bagels at the bookstore and the Starbucks on the opposite end of campus in the Computer Sciences building, TWC begins this fall 2019 semester offering the same sushi, sandwiches, and salads but now along with Starbucks beverages.

Jazzman’s had a unique purpose, offering some of the cheapest coffee on campus and having longer hours than most other spots on the UTEP campus.

But its real importance lied in the central location: it was the place to get affordable tasty coffee without long walks (which is important considering the infamous El Paso weather).

Jazzman’s closed and was torn down over the summer and over its ruins rose TWC. The latter operates pretty much the same hours, and while they offer just about the same food options, the prices went up.

The price change also comes with the famous green and white mermaid queen of coffee logo: Starbucks. TWC serves Starbucks beverages, including pumpkin spice products at the moment, adding more options to the menu as students have noticed.

Georgina Sanchez, a doctoral student in Interdisciplinary Health Science noted these differences. “Now (TWC) have a green matcha tea latte,” Georgina said. “(Texas Western Cafe) has a little bit more variety.”

There are several spots to get various types of coffee on campus, not considering vending machines that dispense iced coffee like the Starbucks cold brews or the departmental offices across campus that sell coffee on the cheap, like in Hudspeth Hall.

Einstein Bros Bagels sells more sophisticated crafted beverages with Vanilla Hazelnut, Caribou Neighborhood, Caribou blend, and Fireside flavored coffees. The Union East building also has a coffee place that “Proudly serves” Starbucks items.

But the trade for TWC over Jazzman’s did cost at least some convenience; Jazzman’s had refills available for students.

Ileana Jacquin, a master’s student in Kinesiology, said that location was important for her. “I have my department right here,” she said gesturing towards the Health Sciences building in front the library. “It’s important to have coffee when you’re a grad student.”

She also remembered that “(Jazzman’s use to have like a coffee here [to the side] where they refill your cup and now you have to order it.”

TWC already seems to be garnering a lot of frequent visitors, but Jazzman’s lives on through all the caffeine driven study sessions students continue to have.

Una Despedida a Jazzman’s y Una Bienvenida a Texas Western Cafe

El Nuevo Lugar de Café en UTEP

Hay un lugar nuevo para saciar tu necesidad de café en la universidad, Texas Western Cafe, el cual reemplazó a Jazzman’s en la biblioteca de UTEP, ahora opera como el local central en la universidad para café.

Entre Einstein’s en la librería y el Starbucks al lado opuesto de la universidad en el edificio de Computer Sciences, TWC comienza este otoño 2019 ofreciendo el mismo menu con sushi, sandwiches y ensaladas pero ahora incluyendo bebidas de Starbucks.

Jazzman’s tenia un papel único, ofreciendo café barato y estando abiertos más horas que otros lugares en UTEP.

Pero su verdadera importancia estaba en su locación central: era el lugar mas conveniente, en donde se podia conseguir café sabroso sin tener que caminar largas distancias (que es importante con el clima famoso de El Paso).

Jazzman’s cerró y fue tumbado durante el verano y ahora sobre sus ruinas está TWC. Este opera básicamente durante las mismas horas, y aunque ofrecen lo mismo con respecto a la comida, los precios subieron.

Con el cambio en precios vino también el famoso logo verde y blanco de la sirena reina del café: Starbucks. TWC ofrece bebidas Starbucks, incluyendo en el momento productos pumpkin spice de temporada, agregando más opciones al menú como muchos estudiantes lo han notado.

Georgina Sanchez, una estudiante en su Ph.D en Interdisciplinary Health Science notó los cambios. “Ahora (TWC) tiene té matcha latte verde,” Georgina mencionó. “(Texas Western Cafe) tiene un poco más de variedad.”

Hay varios lugares para varios tipos de cafés en campus. Sin considerar las máquinas expendedoras que ofrecen café frío como los Starbucks cold brews o las oficinas departamentales a través del campus que venden café barato, como en Hudspeth Hall.

Einstein Bros Bagels vende bebidas preparadas más sofisticadamente con Vanilla Hazelnut, Caribou Neighborhood, Caribou blend y Fireside cafés. Union East también tiene un lugar de café que “sirve orgullosamente” productos Starbucks.

Sin embargo, el cambio de Jazzman’s a TWC ha costado al menos un poco de conveniencia; Jazzman’s tenía refills disponibles a los estudiantes.

Ileana Jacquin, una estudiante de maestría en Kinesiology, dijo que la ubicación era importante para ella. “Tengo my departamento aquí,” dijo mientras apuntaba hacia el edificio de Health Sciences frente a la biblioteca. “Es importante tener café cuando eres un estudiante de maestría.”

Ella también recordó que “solían tener un café aquí [a un lado] donde rellenabas tu vaso y ahora tienes que ordenarlo.”

TWC parece ya estar teniendo varios clientes frecuentes, pero Jazzman’s aún vive a través de toda las sesiones de estudio llenas de cafeína que los estudiantes continuan teniendo.
